John Kirk has an active estate planning and probate practice. He represents a number of closely held businesses. He has represented many clients in the purchase and sale of businesses and is consulted by accountants and other law firms about the tax aspects of corporate acquisitions. He represents clients in administrative hearings before the Internal Revenue Service at all levels.

Kirk spent five years as a trial attorney with the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and tried numerous tax refund cases in federal courts throughout the West. He served more than four years with the Judge Advocate General in the Navy. He was the legal officer at the Naval Air Facility in Okinawa and also pursued government claims under the Medical Care Recovery Act for the Pentagon. Before going to the Navy, he clerked for Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Don Parker.

He began private practice in 1972 with Boyer and Briggs in Bloomfield Hills. Three years later that firm merged with Butzel Long. In 1978, Kirk became a founding member of what is now Meyer & Kirk, P.L.L.C.

Kirk is active in various local, state and national tax and estate planning groups. He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Law.”
