Mark Solomon has been special tax counsel to the firm since 1981.

He is a full-time professor at Walsh College where he has served since 1981 as Chairman of the Taxation and Business Law Department and Director of the Master of Science in Taxation Program. His practice is tax-oriented and includes tax planning, estate planning, tax controversies with the government, business planning for small and medium-sized businesses and professionals, and personal financial planning.

Solomon is admitted to practice in Michigan and Ohio, as well as before the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the Federal District Court for Eastern Michigan, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Solomon is the editor of two teacher packs, Cases and Materials on Consolidated Tax Returns and Cases and Materials on the Application of Legal Principles and Authorities to the Federal Tax Law. He is also the author of A Uniform System of Federal Tax Citation and has served as the book review columnist for the Michigan Tax Lawyer. He is listed in both Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law.

Solomon started his career as a mathematics teacher in the Cleveland Public School System. After completing law school, he served as a tax law specialist in the Corporation Tax Branch of the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service, where he was the recipient of a Department of Treasury Special Achievement Award. Later, he began his private practice with the Detroit law firm now known as Butzel, Long, while simultaneously serving as an adjunct professor at Walsh College and at the University of Detroit Law School. He has been a frequent lecturer and seminar leader on various tax topics around the State.

Solomon currently serves on the City of Troy Charter Revision Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis Club of Troy. He is a life master in the American Contract Bridge League.
